The world is experiencing a golden age of startups. The United States has rapidly developed its startup ecosystem through large investments in Silicon Valley, and other regions like Europe and Asia are also actively enhancing their competitiveness by offering various support measures. In Korea, various nurturing programs are underway, leading to the emergence of startups that pioneer era-changing ideas and innovative products. Choi Jihyun, the lead attorney at the law firm SYU, remarked, "Many startups are preparing to leap into unicorn status by offering innovative services not seen before." She advised, "Given the various factors such as legal regulations that can arise until reaching the trajectory of growth, proactive risk management is essential."

**Innovative Approach of a Innovative Law Firm**

Law firm SYU aims to be a specialized legal partner for startups, providing systematic legal services tailored for innovators. Led by attorneys Choi Jihyun and Song Jiwon, specialists in fields such as finance, fintech, blockchain, and intellectual property law collaborate to seek optimal solutions that integrate law and industry. Particularly, SYU is devising customized legal strategies for early-stage startup founders. Attorney Choi explained, "Startups often lack the organizational infrastructure and financial resources to adequately prepare for potential legal risks that may arise in the future. Therefore, step-by-step risk management, including establishment, investment, and operation, is essential."

To this end, SYU is providing legal safety nets for startups by conducting business model reviews, drafting and reviewing partnership and shareholder agreements, resolving corporate governance and management disputes, drafting and reviewing terms of service and privacy policies, building compliance manuals, and securing authoritative interpretations of legal regulations, thereby illuminating the future blueprint for startups.

**A Growth Partner for Startups**

"I had the opportunity to communicate with startup founders while serving as the CEO of the legal platform company, Lawy. Through this process, I realized the importance of establishing legal compliance to address various management issues faced by many entrepreneurs. Subsequently, I became firmly committed to being a substantial support for corporate growth by engaging closely with startups."

Attorney Choi has laid the foundation for the advancement of startup growth based on her previous experience in entrepreneurship. She has been actively involved in minimizing legal risks inherent in startup operations, including various legal consultations related to fintech institutions' P2P loans and crowdfunding, cryptocurrency transactions, and derivative products of fintech startups, as well as intellectual property rights and trade secret infringements related to NTF technology-based derivative products.

"I am also striving to offer innovative solutions even during investment stages. For instance, while seed investments serve as a means to stabilize businesses through fund acquisition, they can also hinder growth and development due to conflicts of interest among shareholders or unreasonable contract terms. Therefore, I participate in the review process of investment contracts to provide advice that favors clients with a forward-looking perspective."

Additionally, leveraging her broad knowledge and expertise, Attorney Choi is advocating for legislation in promising industries such as blockchain and IT. She emphasized, "Unlike traditional industries, startups often face challenges due to inadequate legal frameworks that reflect emerging technologies. Therefore, I am dedicated to conducting case studies to ensure proper regulatory reforms receive significant attention."

**Legislation Reflecting the Uniqueness of Virtual Assets**

Recently, the National Assembly's Committee on National Defense passed the "Virtual Asset User Protection Act," marking the first legislation specifically addressing virtual assets. This bill encompasses definitions of virtual assets, protection of user assets, regulation and punishment of unfair trading practices, as well as supervision and inspection. The future plan of the National Assembly is to pursue first-stage legislation focusing on investor protection, followed by regulation of virtual asset issuance and disclosure in line with international standards. However, as a specialist in startups, particularly in blockchain and fintech-related legal consultations and litigation, Attorney Choi emphasizes the need for effective alternatives that align with the legislative intent.

"We hope to see legislation that adequately reflects the unique nature of the virtual asset industry. The shortcomings in existing legal regulations concerning virtual assets have clearly shown limitations in protecting users from market manipulation and unfair practices. To ensure the stability and growth of businesses, guidelines for user protection need to be specified, along with the establishment of qualifications and restrictions for entering the virtual asset industry."

Additionally, Attorney Choi underscores the necessity of regulatory frameworks considering advancements in digital technologies. She points out that legislative and policy mechanisms often lag behind technological progress, leading businesses to navigate risks independently or accept potential risks for future development, sometimes seeking interpretations from administrative agencies. To foster more stable startup management, Attorney Choi calls for prompt discussions on comprehensive and effective legislation.

**Forward Movement of a Startup-specialized Law Firm**

Attorney Choi foresees extensive strides as a startup-specialized attorney at the law firm "SYU." She announced plans to intensify social contributions for startups alongside SYU members. Starting with providing "Legal Guidelines for Startup HR and Labor Issues" in collaboration with an online lecture platform company, SYU aims to continue supporting young startup founders with legal assistance through university-industry cooperation.

"As technology-based services, such as artificial intelligence, expand, the importance of startup legal affairs will only increase. As legal professionals, we anticipate resolving current issues arising from technological advancements and contributing to the implementation of various legal systems. SYU is committed to advocating for a diverse range of startup founders, contributing to society's innovation and the creation of new values."
